When her three-year-old son spikes a high fever in the middle of the night, Vivian Winters rushes him to the pediatric hospital where her husband, Ethan Smith, is Chief of Pediatrics. But Ethan is in a meeting and unreachable, and the only doctor on duty is an intern named Emma Brown, who jabs the boy's arm three times without finding a vein and flies into a rage when Vivian asks for someone else.

A passing hematology nurse warns Vivian that Emma is the Chief's assistant and that complaining is dangerous. Emma dismisses the fever as a common cold, prescribes $876 of antibiotics, and refuses to believe Vivian is Ethan's wife, insisting he has no child. When the boy begins seizing, Emma locks the door and smashes Vivian's phone to stop her calling for help.

With her son convulsing in her arms, Vivian presses the emergency button and flees through the shattered door, begging strangers for help as Emma brands her a fraud. Cornered, she grabs the nurse and whispers her name for the Chief.
