Story

The story

After a shift at a KFC, a young worker in uniform stops at the noodle shop next door and orders a $5 promotional bowl of wontons. The owner blocks the self-serve toppings bar, snatches away the table vinegar, and threatens to have him fired. When he flips the table, she warns that her son-in-law belongs to one of the richest families on the East Coast.

Then he notices the emerald bracelet on her wrist — the very one he gave his girlfriend, Jessica, engraved with her mother's initials. The owner is Susan Zhang, and the daughter she keeps praising is Jessica herself. As a crowd films and she demands thousands for the damages, he opens his banking app and offers to buy the restaurant outright.

She insists her daughter's boyfriend is the Gu family heir. He says he is that heir, and offers to prove it.

I was working a summer job at a KFC. After my shift, I was still in my uniform when I went to the noodle shop next door and ordered a bowl of wontons.

I was about to add some of the free toppings from the self-serve bar when the owner blocked my path.

“The $5 promotional bowl doesn't include the free toppings.”
