Story

The story

Sophia accompanies her boyfriend Cole Griffin to his family's New Year's Eve dinner, hoping to finally reveal the truth about her career and propose. But Cole's childhood friend Quilla Spencer accuses her of being a bar girl, producing a police penalty notice bearing her name. Sophia, who actually serves as bureau chief and signed those vice-squad cases, insists on a name mix-up and demands a video confrontation.

Cole's parents, who have long looked down on her rural background, side with Quilla. Cole himself wavers, then slaps Sophia when Quilla presents staged photos of a raid. Quilla's men drag Sophia into the snow, stripping her to her underclothes as neighbors mock her. Her calls to station chief Owen Clark go unanswered.

Humiliated and freezing, Sophia watches Cole's indifference harden into disgust, and she must find a way to clear her name.

Opening excerpt

In the middle of dinner, his childhood friend suddenly slammed her spoon on the table.

“Cole, how could you bring a bar girl to our New Year’s Eve dinner?”

The room fell silent.

Everyone thought she simply had too much to drink.

But she spoke with complete confidence.
