Mock Funeral: Deep Love Cannot Overcome All Difficulties

When his dying daughter asks for one last thing — that her mother, Jane, attend the mock funeral she has staged for herself — Mike agrees, even letting Jane spend one night with her old flame, Winston Yeates, in exchange. But Jane never comes. By evening the girl is gone, and Mike spends the night clutching her urn, only to hear Winston's voice on the phone and hours of the couple together in the background.

He buries his daughter alone, clears out Jane's belongings and tells her to leave the home that was never legally hers. Jane arrives with Winston instead, unrepentant, and calls the funeral a mere mock-up that can be repeated. For Mike, who spent years begging for scraps of her attention, the love is finally gone.

Now he stands at the door of the only life he built, done pleading, and asks her to walk out of it.
