Story
The story
For ten years, Chloe has lived in Alex's mansion, paying off a debt of gratitude by doing a hundred things he asks. His first demand made her his wife without a certificate or a wedding; the second bound her to raise his infant son, Leo. Now Leo is ten and hates her, and Alex's new girlfriend, Serena, has moved in. Alex orders Chloe to run three laps barefoot through the city, then dive into the lake for Leo's toy, while Serena and his friends laugh at her.
Bruised, cut by glass marbles and shards, Chloe is refused a doctor and made to sleep on the floor as the ninety-second demand. When Leo kicks her stomach at breakfast, Alex dismisses her pain as acting, and Serena serves her blueberry toast. Chloe only wants the hundred demands finished so she can leave, but Alex grows colder each time she asks how many remain.
Her feelings for him are already severed; only the debt keeps her there.
Opening excerpt
To please his new girlfriend, Alex made me run three laps around the city barefoot.
"Is this your 90th demand?" I asked.
He scoffed. "You're such a doormat anyway. Perfect for entertaining Serena."
I insisted, "Is it the 90th demand?"
He grew impatient. "Fine, I'll combine it with the 91st. After you finish the three laps, go fish out my son's toy from the lake."
I didn't hesitate. I just left to run.
All because I'd promised to do a hundred things for him, to repay his kindness.
Once the debt was settled, I could finally leave.
