Story
The story
Sophie Song joins her boyfriend Ethan Black for a night with his old friends, where Chloe Miller and the others mock her and demand she drink. When Sophie refuses, they set a price of $500 a glass, and she quietly pays $50,000 instead, revealing herself as the heiress of the city's richest family. The group instantly turns sycophantic, while Chloe seethes at being upstaged.
Sophie keeps spending to win them over, buying Ethan a sports car and renting a racetrack, but she is playing a longer game. Scars on her arm hint at old wounds, and she works to pry the group apart from within.
When Jason sees the messages Sophie sent Chloe, the cracks she has been cultivating finally surface.
Opening excerpt
The guys were cracking inside jokes and roasting Ethan. I stood there, wearing a carefully practiced smile.
Chloe Miller tossed Ethan’s jacket back at him. "You wore the wrong jacket last night, fine. But returning it without dry cleaning? Gross."
One of the guys, eager to stir the pot, sneered, "Ethan, you really found yourself a princess, huh? Take my advice, pick a girl who's domesticated and useful!"
"Hand-washing clothes, cooking fresh meals, buying gifts for her man every month—you gotta test her for like three to five years before putting a ring on it!"
