Story

The story

At the New Year's family dinner, Emma Quinn's mother-in-law praises Charlotte's home cooking while mocking Emma as an out-of-town woman with no manners. Ethan Brooks dotes on Charlotte's baby son, little Edward, yet coldly orders his own crying daughter away and slaps her. Emma finally snaps: she upends the table, scalds Ethan with spicy pork blood stew, and storms out with her daughter and a packed suitcase, throwing divorce papers in his face.

Emma has long suspected Ethan of an affair. Since their daughter's birth he has shown her no warmth, and his mother took Emma's money to care for Charlotte instead. Emma knows she cannot leave empty-handed, so she resolves to gather proof and make her unfaithful husband and his mother pay.

On New Year's Eve she takes her daughter to a run-down apartment of her own, where fresh posts from her mother-in-law and Charlotte await.

Her mother-in-law warmly took the food container and said, “Local girls are so thoughtful. A woman from out of town can’t even make a tasty food.”

Ethan Brooks put down his phone and gently took Emma ’s son, soothing him, but then coldly told their daughter, who had accidentally fallen and was crying, to move away.

I removed my apron, picked up my daughter and sat down, holding back my anger.

"People from small places have no manners," my mother-in-law criticized. "The guest hasn’t even sat down, but she’s already made herself comfortable."
