Story

The story

Elizabeth returns home early to surprise her younger brother, Thomas, only to find him curled inside a wooden dog cage in the yard, chained by the neck and calling himself a puppy. Her stepmother, Agatha, heavily pregnant and wearing the Woodward Family signet ring, claims Thomas chose this life because studying was too hard. Elizabeth's father, Richard Woodward, sides with Agatha, slapping Elizabeth and threatening to disown her when she refuses to accept Agatha as her mother.

Elizabeth learns Thomas has been starved, beaten, whipped and burned, his ribs and skull damaged. The household staff now answer only to Agatha, and her nephew, Andrew Redmonton, forces Thomas to kneel and eat bread off the floor like a dog. Elizabeth vows to protect her brother and reclaim what belongs to them, but Agatha demands Elizabeth surrender her half of the Woodward signet ring for the child she carries.

With her brother broken and the estate turned against her, Elizabeth must decide how far she will go to save him.

Opening excerpt

By chance, I saw part of his clothes sticking out from the closed dog cage near the yard gate. I rushed over, opened it and found his small body curled up in a wooden dog cage, barely one square meter in size.

I was shocked.

“Why are you sleeping here? Come out, I brought your favorite New York cheesecake.”
