Story

The story

Susan Simmons bought a seaside villa so her mother, who has asthma, could rest and recover. When her husband Corey Mason asks that his assistant Zoe Fox's mother, Constance Shepherd, stay with them, Susan agrees. Soon Corey demands the east bedroom for Constance, and Susan's mother gives it up to keep the peace. Then Corey tells Susan her mother must move out because her night waking disturbs Constance's rest.

At breakfast, with housekeeper Lena Lambert serving, Susan lays out the deed and receipts: the villa is hers, bought in her mother's name. Corey orders her to apologize and threatens to send her and her mother back to the country. Susan refuses, tells Constance she is not welcome, and decides on divorce. Corey returns with an ultimatum: three days to make Constance and Zoe forgive her.

Susan uses the time to prepare, and calls a lawyer about ending the marriage.

Opening excerpt

My mother had asthma, so I'd gone out of my way to buy a villa by the sea where she could rest and recover.

My husband said his assistant Zoe Fox's mother had asthma too, and asked if she could stay with us for a while.

I agreed. What I didn't expect was that a few days later, my husband would come to me with another request.

He said Zoe's mother loved watching the sunrise and wanted the east bedroom. When I refused, he went straight to my mother.

My mother was afraid we'd fight, so she gave up the room.
