Story
The story
Maya has spent her life being told she is her mother Shelly's favorite, a fragile girl whose severe allergies to red meat and seafood demand endless special meals. Relatives like Aunt Elise praise Shelly's tireless devotion, while her father Gary, often away on construction contracts, urges Maya to be understanding. Yet every dish Shelly makes is dry, overcooked and bland, and the praise feels less like love than a performance.
On her eighteenth birthday, Shelly presents a cake built from stale bread cubes and chemical-tasting frosting, insisting Maya cannot have dairy. When Maya protests, the room turns on her as an ungrateful brat; Gary slaps her, and Elise defends Shelly's sacrifice. The gifts are a melted bag of candy and a cheap prepaid phone, though Gary supposedly deposited thirty thousand dollars into Shelly's account. When Shelly serves salmon and Maya refuses it, Gary strikes her again and reaches for his belt.
Surrounded by relatives who call her a burden and a waste, Maya finally questions the lies she has been fed about her own body and her mother's love.
