Story

The story

For five years, Charlotte Lacy lived in the Farnese Palace, dressed in silks and fed sweet pastries by Christian Farnese, who believed she had saved his life. In truth her mind was fogged, clouded by the medicine her sister Margaret had tested, and her parents pushed her forward to claim a deed that was never hers.

When Margaret wakes and comes to the Palace steps, the truth breaks open. Christian forces a glass of arsenical wine down Charlotte's throat and leaves her locked away to die. But poison meets the bitter medicine already in her body, and the fog lifts at last.

Charlotte rises, clear-eyed and composed, and tells Christian she owes him nothing. As she moves to leave the Farnese Palace behind, he seizes her wrist, unwilling to let her walk away.

He hated me for taking what was never mine to take — for taking credit for what my older sister had done, for playing him like a fool for five whole years.

What he didn't know was that the cup of arsenical wine didn't take my life. On the contrary, it used poison to counter poison, curing the five years of mental sluggishness that had left me dull and slow.

The moment my mind cleared, I left without looking back.

And when he realized I was truly gone — Christian lost his mind.
