Back home, I went into my study and opened the computer. The browser search history was full of Thomas’s queries about liver cancer.

“How long can someone with advanced liver cancer live?”

“How much does liver cancer surgery cost?”

“How long can someone live with liver cancer without surgery?”

“What is the success rate of liver cancer surgery?”

“Is there a possibility of curing liver cancer?”

If it were before, I would have certainly thought he was concerned about my condition and been moved by it. Now, I finally knew he was calculating days and times, and costs, anticipating when his happy life would finally begin. A heartless dog!

I logged into his online banking. Over the years, I had given Thomas complete trust, never checking his whereabouts, his phone, or his bank cards. So, he felt quite secure with me and hadn’t changed his banking password. Line by line, I reviewed the transaction history, and my heart was pierced again and again. In just one year, he had transferred one hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars! His current balance was just over fifty thousand. He only gave me a thousand dollars a month for household expenses, yet he transferred one hundred and thirty-seven thousand to his mistress! How ironic!

I had told him several times that the household allowance wasn’t enough, but he always told me to be more frugal. He said his money was invested in various financial products, which would generate annual income, allowing our son to study abroad in the future, supporting his growth, and providing us with a peaceful and happy old age. I believed him. But now, those one hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars in transfers felt like a heavy slap, disorienting me! Then, it transformed into a raging fire in my heart!

Endure? Impossible! Thomas, since you treat me this way, I will no longer have any attachment to you.

At 10 PM, Thomas entered, hiccuping from drink. Seeing my grim face as I sat on the living room sofa, he assumed I was upset about him drinking. He chuckled, removing his jacket. “They just dragged me along for a few drinks, just a little, heh heh.”

I looked at him coldly. He grew a bit impatient, frowning. “You just worry about your own health now; you don’t need to worry about me.”

I struggled to suppress my anger, staring intensely at him, speaking each word distinctly. “One hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars. In one year, you gave Maya Thorne one hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars!”

He suddenly stiffened, abruptly looking up. “You, you, what did you say?!”

My eyes blazed with fury, glaring at him. “Thomas Ford, are you even human?! One hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars! Joint marital property! Maya Thorne, you *must* return it!”

His drunkenness completely faded. He desperately tried to conceal his inner panic, shouting at me, “What hundred and thirty-seven thousand? What madness are you talking about?!”

“Keep pretending. Let’s see how long you can keep it up! See for yourself!” I showed him the online screenshots on my phone. “Apartment purchase, eighty thousand! February 14th, transfer 52,000! March 8th, transfer 10,100! And 1314, 520! Thomas, twelve years of marriage, what have you ever given me?!”

Tears again streamed down my face. My throat choked, and I wept uncontrollably. “I worked so hard managing our home, yet you cheated, giving your mistress one hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars!”

“Thomas Ford, I trusted you so much, but you treated me like an idiot! You’re heartless!”

Thomas glanced at my phone, then flared up in anger. “Helen Fairfax! You checked my accounts! So what? You have cancer, what’s the point of worrying about all this? What you should be thinking about now is how to save your life, not me. What’s the point?”

He finally dropped his façade of a good husband, revealing his true colors before me. I waved my phone. “Thomas Ford, this money *must* be returned. Otherwise, I’ll go to your company and ruin your reputation. Do you believe me?”

Thomas seemed a little uneasy, but still bluffed. “If I lose my job because of your drama, then there won’t even be money to treat your illness. Won’t that just hurt you in the end?”

Making a scene means no treatment? Haha, he’s the one who needs treatment, and he’s threatening me now?! I sneered. “Treatment my ass. I won’t get treatment. I demand she return that one hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars. Otherwise, I’ll not only make a scene at your company but also file a lawsuit against her!”

Seeing my uncompromising stance, Thomas softened his tone. “I, I was just playing along, wasn’t I? My heart is with this family; what are you afraid of?”

“Heart? Your heart is worse than a dog’s!”

“But, but she can’t come up with over a million right away.”

“Then it’ll be a court judgment and forced execution.”

Thomas suddenly sneered. “Then go ahead and sue. From filing to a court judgment, it will take at least several months. I’m just afraid that the money won’t be recovered, and you’ll already be… hmph.”

“Is that so?” I raised an eyebrow. “Shall we see about that then?!”

Thomas didn’t want to waste any more words with me. He stiffened his neck. “Fine, do whatever you want. Want to make a scene? At most, I’ll resign. With my reputation in the industry, finding another job will be easy.” I sat there, unmoving. “Very well. Then, let’s do it tomorrow. You wait.”
