Story

The story

Clara Reynolds is a painter whose hands are her life. When her fiancé, Ethan Vance, heir to Vance Corp, demands she paint a wedding portrait for him and his mistress, Hailey Carter, she agrees—only to have bodyguards crush her painting hand on his orders. He wants Hailey to claim the masterpiece as her own, and a wife without hands cannot paint.

Ethan keeps Clara as his nominal wife while Hailey takes her place beside him. Trapped in a hospital room under guard, her phone taken, Clara is told to heal quietly and accept his generosity. The portrait goes viral, and strangers begin to question who truly painted it.

Stripped of her art and her freedom, Clara must decide what remains of her when the one thing she loved is taken.

Opening excerpt

The final painting of my life, the very last stroke I’d ever make, was the wedding portrait of my fiancé and his childhood sweetheart.

The second I finished, my fiancé crushed my hand. It crippled me for life.

The bodyguards slammed me onto the marble floor, their heavy boots pinning down my right hand—the one that painted.

I writhed in a pain that felt like my bones were melting. “Ethan! The painting is yours! What more do you want?”
