Story

The story

Caught in an avalanche with his stepbrother William Carson, Wilfred Carson watches their father, Michael Carson, beg him to give up the single stretcher to William, who has a weak constitution. In his previous life, Wilfred obeyed and froze to death on the mountain, while William inherited his assets and took up with his fiancee, Violet Hathaway. Now he has returned to that same moment, and this time he nods quietly and lets William be carried away.

Left behind in the snow, Wilfred digs a shelter and calls Zack Fox, a friend from his outdoor-sports days, who vows to come for him before the coming snowstorm halts all rescue efforts. Wilfred also asks Zack to trace Violet's recent flights and to leak photos of her and William together in the hospital.

As night falls and the cold closes in, Wilfred waits for Zack's team to reach him, determined to settle accounts with those who left him to die.

Opening excerpt

My dad grabs my hand as he tells me, "Wilfred, William has a weak constitution. Please give the spot to him. You can wait for the team to come back for you."

In my previous life, I believed my dad, so I gave the spot of survival away to William.

But later on, the blizzard picked up again, which suspended the search and rescue team's efforts to save me.
