The story

For six years, Aubrey served time in prison for Cayden Cooper, the man who pulled her from a pile of corpses and made her his most reliable blade. He promised they would marry once she was free. On the day of her release, no one is waiting. Dennis, the boy she once picked up, brings her to a gleaming villa Cayden arranged as a token of gratitude, but Cayden himself stays away, and his evasions leave her uneasy.

Searching his name, Aubrey finds the truth: Cayden is married to the daughter of Nathan Grant, the man who helped send her to prison. When she finally reaches him by phone, he does not deny it, only asks for a chance to explain. She ends the call without a word.

A promised future has become a stranger's world, and the man she gave everything for now belongs to the family that ruined her.

I'd been at Cayden's side since I was eighteen. He'd plucked me from a pile of corpses, once declaring me his sharpest, most reliable blade. I'd done his dirty work, even serving time in prison for him.

But on the day of my release, he was nowhere to be found. I later learned he'd married the daughter of a wealthy family—someone of his own standing. Cayden insisted it was just for show, that I was the one he truly loved. But I knew he was lying.
