Story

The story

Caroline Swanson moves into a new complex only to discover that her neighbor, Lucius Armstrong, has bought up every parking space in the building. The only way to park is to rent one of his spots for five thousand dollars a month. She refuses, so she parks on the empty lot outside—and wakes to find him slapping a ticket on her car, taunting her that anyone who won't rent will pay five hundred dollars a day in fines.

Lucius moonlights with the traffic enforcement unit and claims every public space for ten miles around is contracted to his management company. When Caroline complains, the property manager, Clark Perry, brushes her off. As tickets pile up on residents' cars, she proposes pooling money to build their own parking lot.

With her neighbor Alison Ball and the other frustrated residents behind her, Caroline refuses to be bullied—and now it is a question of who will outlast whom.

Opening excerpt

If you wanted to park, your only option was to rent one of his spaces for five thousand dollars a month.

I decided it wasn't worth it, so I just parked on the empty lot outside the complex for the time being.

The next morning, I found my neighbor slapping a ticket on my car,

and when he saw me, he actually smiled and taunted me:

"Don't want to rent from me? Then you can pay five hundred bucks a day in tickets.
