Story
The story
At the altar, Lily is abandoned by her fiancé Ryan, who leaves her for his childhood sweetheart Mia. That night she drinks herself into oblivion and wakes beside Ryan's older brother, Eric. Flushed with shame, she calls it a mistake, but Eric whispers that he has always wanted her, and they marry at the courthouse.
For five years Eric treats Lily like a queen, and she believes he loves her. Then, at a party, she overhears him confess that he funneled his money to Ryan so Mia could have the life she wanted, and that he married Ryan's ex to get her off their backs. The love she thought they had was an elaborate lie.
Now Lily keeps a worn notebook of every penny, propping up the fantasy life Eric funds for his brother and Mia. When Mia visits, Eric offers her Lily's mother's jade bangle, and Lily must decide whether to keep enduring the charade or finally walk away.
Opening excerpt
The next morning, I woke up in bed with his older brother.
Flushed with shame, I scrambled into my clothes.
“This was a mistake,” I stammered. “You don’t owe me anything.”
But Eric stared at me, eyes red-rimmed.
“Lily,” he whispered hoarsely, “what does he have that I don’t? Why won’t you look at me?”
