The story
They always called Lucas the crazy one. The afternoon he caught Cynthia cheating, he dragged her over the railing of their fifth-floor balcony. Gravity did not kill her; it left him a ghost behind his own eyelids, locked in a coma for three agonizing years. Through those years she brought the other man to his bedside, and by the third year his name rarely crossed their lips, swallowed up by doctor visits, ovulation schedules and florists' brochures for a wedding.
On the morning of that wedding, Lucas woke. Under a blinding sun, Cynthia was kissing her foster brother, Scott, her hand resting over the small swell of his stomach. His sister Megan cut him off in fury; his father pleaded with him to let them have their peace. Then Scott opened his mouth to speak, and Lucas's hollow, starving stomach spasmed. His hand closed around the silver handle of the cake knife.
Cynthia stepped down from the altar, warning him to put the knife down. None of them believed him. They thought he was still the monster they had made him out to be; they did not realize that this time, he was truly letting go.
