Seven Years of Omertà

For seven years, Olivia has managed every laundered dollar flowing through the Sloane syndicate, living inside the monitored silence of a townhouse on Sloane territory. When a car wreck costs her the baby she had just learned she was carrying, Dominic, the Don, drives past her bleeding on the pavement and shields his aide's eyes instead of stopping. Calmly, Olivia calls Salvatore Mancini, the rival family locked in a decade-long cold war with the Sloanes, and agrees to leave the city and handle his books. Dominic barely listens, distracted by his phone and by Penelope Vitale, the aide he chauffeures and protects while never once offering Olivia a ring or a ride. He brings home pastries meant for Penelope and forgets Olivia's peanut allergy.

As Dominic disappears into his study, Olivia signs Salvatore's terms and begins drafting her formal severance of allegiance, knowing exactly what it means.
