Story
The story
Molly was kidnapped at three and raised in the mountains as a child bride. When she finally returns to the Hollands at twelve, her parents have already given her name and all their love to an adopted daughter, Ellie. On the birthday the two girls share, Molly trails behind the family outing carrying the picnic, blamed for a smeared cake and ordered to replace it.
When a truck speeds past, Ellie pushes Molly into its path, then tells their mother that Molly failed to protect her. Her mother slaps her; her father carries Ellie away to the hospital without a backward glance. Bleeding and alone, Molly collapses.
No one in the family remembers that it is her birthday too.
